How to choose a Korean face cleanser

Cleansing is the step the whole Korean routine is built on. The best-known approach is double cleansing: an oil-based cleanser first, to dissolve makeup, sunscreen and sebum, then a water-based cleanser to remove what is left without drying out the skin.

Step 1: cleansing oil or balm

Step 2: foam or gel cleanser

  • Low-pH gels, close to the skin's natural acidity, such as the Low-pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser by Cosrx: a good morning option.
  • Foams that cleanse more deeply for oily skin, such as the Poremizing Deep Cleansing Foam by Skin1004.
  • Salicylic acid cleansers for blemish-prone skin, such as the Salicylic Acid Daily Gentle Cleanser by Cosrx; see also our acne skincare.

For your skin type

  • Dry or sensitive skin: gentle gels that leave no tight feeling, such as the Birch Juice Moisturising Cleanser by Round Lab.
  • Oily or combination skin: double cleanse in the evening; a single gentle gel is often enough in the morning.

How to use it

Massage each cleanser for about a minute, rinse with lukewarm water and pat dry. Skin that feels tight after rinsing is a sign of a cleanser that is too harsh.
